Menlo Park, Calif. - March 8, 1995 - Richardson, TX - Alcatel Network Systems, a leading supplier of SONET (synchronous optical network) transmission, switching, and network management products, announced today that it has selected the industry-leading VERSANT ODBMS for incorporation in its next-generation network management platform. This critical Telecommunications Management Network (TMN) product will offer the support for element management, allowing service providers to manage the network level aspects of operations, administration, maintenance, and provisioning (OAM&P). The VERSANT ODBMS provides both scalability and the ability to store and maintain path information as telecommunications networks evolve and grow.
"We believe that the VERSANT ODBMS will be a key part of our business success," said Paul Littlewood, senior director of product planning and network management for Alcatel. "We have taken another step on the road towards achieving SONET interoperability and working effectively in an open systems environment. This is critical for the next-generation telephone networks." The enhanced functionality provided by the VERSANT ODBMS includes the ability to provision advanced services using a simple "point and click" interface.
Telephone companies and other advanced fiber-optic network operators have two critical business needs. First, managing the network is a critical means of managing costs and loads. Second, delivering new and enhanced services to customers determines the winners and losers in the telecommunications race. Alcatel is the first vendor to provide a TMN platform to manage third-party network elements. Giving customers management capability over network elements made by different vendors while continuing to build on HP OpenView will allow telecommunications customers to manage their entire network efficiently.
"Alcatel's decision again confirms Versant's success in the telecommunications arena," said David Banks, president and CEO of Versant. "Our focus in providing network management solutions gives customers the confidence to base their future products and business on Versant, partnering for our joint success."
The promise of Alcatel's functionality has already interested both foreign and domestic buyers. The network level object-oriented database enhancements to Alcatel's TMN-based management platform will be available by the end of 1995.
